Gambian Farmers Tour Songhai Farm, Learn Organic Fertilizer Techniques

Twenty farmers from three Gambian regions visited two agricultural sites Saturday to learn organic farming methods. The Njawara Agricultural Training Centre organized the trip with ActionAid International under a European Union project. Participants traveled to the Gambia Songhai Initiative center and master farmer Momodou Loum's operation. The tour aimed to teach farmers about organic fertilizer benefits for crops and vegetables.

Mbye Saine manages the Songhai center and explained how the government supports youth training through the Youth Ministry and United Nations. He said 50 young people and women currently receive hands-on agricultural education at the facility. The center teaches organic pesticide use and converts animal waste into cooking gas. Saine noted these practices help farmers fight climate change effects.

Alpha Sey leads the training center and praised the knowledge sharing during the visit. Project manager Saikou Bah said farmers learned poultry care, plant nursery skills and organic pest control methods. The SAPOF project plans to create compost production sites across three communities. Officials emphasized the practical learning opportunities the tour provided.

Master farmer Loum encouraged visitors to practice mixed agriculture for better food security and jobs. He thanked government support that helped him expand into poultry and buy equipment. Female farmers MaNyima Jatta and Kaddy Jammeh said organic methods improve crop quality and productivity. Both women requested additional training programs and support for vegetable gardens. The exchange visit connected experienced farmers with those seeking to improve their techniques.
