The National Council for Civic Education has launched a nationwide advocacy training program to strengthen citizen engagement across The Gambia. Titled “Advocacy Playbook: Demand Rights and Influence Policy,” the two-week initiative began Monday and will hold two-day sessions in all seven regions, reaching about 150 participants per location.
The program targets members of community organizations, civil society groups, media outlets, marginalized populations and local agencies. Rather than focusing on theory, it emphasizes practical skills such as strategic advocacy planning, lobbying, coalition building and respectful policy engagement. Officials say this approach addresses long-standing exclusion faced by women, youth, persons with disabilities and minority groups in decision-making.
Funded by the EU-UNDP GREAT Initiative in partnership with TANGO, the training will take place in Basse, Janjanbureh, Kerewan, Mansakonko, Brikama and Kanifing. Local leaders have welcomed the effort, with Ward Councilor Musukoi Badjie affirming the duty of elected officials to represent their constituents and Chief Lamin Mondo Jatta highlighting the role of civic education in promoting peace and balancing rights with responsibility. NCCE aims to cultivate a new generation of advocates who can connect grassroots concerns to national policy and foster a more inclusive democracy.
