Gambia's GPU readies for milestone 10th journalism awards

The Gambia Press Union has launched preparations for its tenth National Journalism Awards through its National Journalism Awards Committee. Vice Chairperson Therese Fatou Gomez addressed media representatives at the Bakadaji Hotel during Monday's press conference. The committee established eligibility criteria covering journalistic works from January 2024 through December 2024 and January through July 2025. This anniversary edition celebrates ten years of professional journalism recognition within the nation. The submission deadline awaits official announcement.

Fifteen award categories will continue for the 2025 ceremony spanning diverse fields such as investigative reporting, human rights coverage, environmental issues, and sports journalism. Gomez emphasized the awards' dual purpose of celebrating individual achievement while encouraging broader media excellence. The recognition program reinforces journalism's essential role in democratic accountability and national development. May 3rd traditionally hosts the ceremony to align with World Press Freedom Day. Enhanced visibility initiatives may accompany this landmark edition to strengthen public engagement.
