Gates memo downplays climate apocalypse

Bill Gates released a memo ahead of the COP30 climate summit in Brazil, arguing that humanity can survive and prosper despite rising temperatures. The Microsoft co-founder said efforts should focus on reducing poverty and disease in vulnerable nations rather than meeting specific warming targets. He challenged the Paris Agreement's 1.5 degrees Celsius goal as the primary metric of success.

Environmental scientists rejected his position as creating false divisions between development and emission reductions. Rachel Cleetus from the Union of Concerned Scientists said that welfare improvements and temperature limits are directly connected. Critics warned the memo might justify delaying action against fossil fuel use.

Gates invests through Breakthrough Energy in technologies that reduce the costs of clean alternatives to cement, steel, and aviation fuel. He praised Brazil's COP30 agenda, set for November 2025 in Belem, which emphasizes adaptation finance for developing countries. The United Nations projects warming between 2.6 and 3.1 degrees Celsius by 2100 under current policies.
