Gauteng cops pull 45 unsafe vehicles, arrest 27 in festive crackdown

Gauteng traffic cops just spent a week on an absolute tear. In a single stretch from late December, the province’s transport inspectorate impounded 30 vehicles, discontinued 45 more as unsafe, and arrested 27 people, with most busts tied to drunk driving and attempted bribery. MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela is pushing a zero-tolerance message as part of a broader festive safety clampdown that also saw nearly 200 minibus taxis without proper license discs and almost 200 unlicensed drivers cited.

These operations, running across Tshwane, Johannesburg, and Ekurhuleni, specifically targeted public transport, taking 65 minibuses off the road for critical safety failures. The enforcement surge aims to reduce road fatalities in a province that recorded 137 traffic deaths in the first three weeks of December alone. The aggressive posture aligns with a reported national drop in road fatalities this season, attributed to increased police visibility and strict checks.

The MEC emphasized that removing unroadworthy vehicles and unlicensed operators is a non-negotiable step to protect lives, particularly during a high-volume travel period. This continued pressure, including joint operations that resulted in further arrests on outstanding warrants, underscores a provincial strategy to combat persistent risks like impaired driving and corrupt practices, even as overall road death numbers show some seasonal improvement.
