Gauteng project targets maintenance defaulters' credit reports

Gauteng province implements a pilot program targeting parents who fail child support payments through credit bureau reporting. Ten provincial courts participate in this accountability initiative that emerged from a November 2023 agreement between the Department of Justice and the Social Justice Foundation. The program officially launched in August 2024 across courts in Thembisa, Pretoria, Johannesburg, Soweto, and six other locations.

Officials forward defaulting parent information to credit agencies after completing legal verification processes. This reporting affects loan applications and credit purchases for non-compliant individuals. Training sessions for court personnel began recently as part of structured implementation procedures.

Statistics reveal that seventy percent of maintenance-ordered parents default within two years of initial orders. The system enhances enforcement through improved attachment orders and debt collection mechanisms. Legal protections remain in place through dispute resolution opportunities and regulatory compliance measures.

The Ministry emphasizes child welfare protection rather than parental punishment as the primary objective. National expansion depends on pilot program results and effectiveness measurements.
