Gcina Mhlanga shapes arts legacy at Amakhosi Centre

Gcina Warabile Mhlanga has established herself as an arts administrator and cultural strategist in Bulawayo while honoring the legacy of her father, renowned playwright Cont Mhlanga. As the eldest daughter of the Amakhosi Cultural Centre founder, she has taken a central role in reviving the institution he created in 1982, which had faced near-closure before her efforts restored its position as a hub for artistic development and youth programs.

Mhlanga serves as both arts administrator at the center and chairperson of the Amakhosi Foundation Trust, overseeing initiatives like the Amateur Arts Development Programme. Her work extends to a board position at Fair Talk Communications, where she leads the programming committee for two radio stations. With a degree in Development Studies, she focuses on creating sustainable frameworks to strengthen the creative sector through improved policy implementation and institutional support.

She recalls her father teaching her that artistic work rarely receives immediate recognition, a lesson that prepared her for industry challenges as she builds her career independent of his shadow.
