German nurse gets life for murdering 10 patients, 27 attempts

A German palliative care nurse received a life sentence Thursday for killing ten patients and attempting to kill twenty-seven others at a Wuerselen hospital between late 2023 and mid-2024. The Aachen court determined his actions showed exceptional severity, blocking potential early release after fifteen years.

Prosecutors proved the man administered excessive morphine and midazolam doses during overnight shifts to reduce his workload, displaying indifference toward vulnerable elderly patients. Investigators continue reviewing suspicious deaths from his nursing career spanning since 2007, with grave excavations underway to identify additional victims. The defendant may appeal the verdict while remaining incarcerated.

This case echoes Germany's deadliest serial killer case involving nurse Niels Högel, who received life imprisonment in 2019 for eighty-five patient murders. Authorities arrested the current offender in 2024 after detecting irregularities in patient deaths. Medical staff observed his irritation toward high-need patients and unauthorized medication practices. The court emphasized that his abuse of professional trust warranted maximum punishment under German law.
