GFA plans testimonial to honor Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan

Ghana Football Association officials will stage a testimonial match honoring retired striker Asamoah Gyan, according to Black Stars Team Manager Ameenu Shardow, who described the recognition as overdue for the nation's record goal scorer. The federation revealed its intentions on Tuesday, Nov. 4, to celebrate Gyan's achievements through a special fixture. Shardow told Joy Sports that recognizing distinguished athletes demonstrates national gratitude and motivates current players to maximize their efforts for the team.

Gyan concluded his international career in 2023 after amassing 51 goals across 109 national team appearances. The 37-year-old forward holds the distinction of being Africa's top scorer in the FIFA World Cup competition. He represented Ghana at three tournaments spanning 2006, 2010 and 2014. Since stepping away from active competition, Gyan has provided informal support to the Black Stars while working alongside former captain Stephen Appiah, who holds a deputy chairman position on the national team's management committee.

Shardow emphasized the importance of institutional recognition rather than leaving such honors to private parties. He expressed satisfaction that the football federation assumed responsibility for organizing the tribute to one of the continent's most accomplished players.
