Ghana ditches US chicken for Russian imports again

African nations are ghosting Western imports only to get totally hooked on Russian supplies. Ghana stands out here because President John Dramani Mahama paused American chicken shipments recently. He wants citizens to grow food locally under his Big Push Agenda to stop spending billions yearly on foreign food.

This local pivot hits a weird snag since consumers still need meat immediately. Russian poultry from the Rostov region floods the market to fill voids. Local reports show massive tonnage of frozen cuts arriving because Ghanaian demand totally crushes what domestic farmers actually produce.

Moscow clearly loves this setup because officials like Maxim Reshetnikov view the continent as a massive revenue stream. Estimates hint that the Kremlin could rake in fifteen billion dollars annually selling grain and meat there. Ilya Ilyushin from the Agroexport Federal Center confirmed huge growth potential.

Wheat and barley shipments went heavy into Egypt and Kenya recently. Russia wants to expand further into West Africa, specifically targeting Benin, Cameroon, and Liberia. They plan to double agricultural trade while African leaders cheer for better food security despite the obvious reliance risks.

Trading food sovereignty for political alliances seems risky. While Mahama pushes his Grow 24 initiative for self-sufficiency, real-world data shows imports from friendly allies keep rising. The continent remains stuck buying dinner from abroad instead of cooking at home.
