Ghana Okada Age Cut Lets 21 Year Olds Go Wild

The Transport Minister has asked the Cabinet to approve a lower age for motorcycle taxi riders. The ministry wants to cut the age rule for Okada drivers from 25 to 21. Joseph Bukari Nikpe told transport business heads about this plan at a Tuesday meeting. The group talked about problems and opportunities in their field and gave ideas to help shape new rules.

The government aims to legalize motorcycle taxis by updating the 2012 road rules. Current laws ban using motorcycles and three-wheelers for paid rides. Officials first considered keeping the age of all commercial drivers at 25. Okada riders immediately fought against this age limit. This fight over the age rule has delayed the new law, Nikpe said.

All groups involved suggest lowering the age to 21 instead of 25. The minister said they will make this change if the Cabinet says yes. The law would then be fully updated with the new age limit.
