Police arrested four Chinese men for illegal gold mining near important rivers that supply drinking water to local communities. The suspects operated without permits close to the Subin and Jimi Rivers at Atatam. Officers worked with Dr. Hanna Bisiw from the Minerals Development Fund to carry out the raid. The operation happened Saturday at the Adansi Asokwa District location. Officials say the mining activities threatened both the environment and public health.
The arrested men are Li Quan who is 44 years old, Lu Jianzheng who is 36, Li Xuyu who is 47, and Su Shanxing who is 63. Police seized seven large digging machines from the illegal site. Officers also took three guns that belonged to the suspects. All four men remain locked up and are helping with the investigation. The equipment stays under police control.
This arrest forms part of Ghana's nationwide fight against galamsey operations that damage natural resources. The Subin River has suffered heavy pollution and filling with dirt from years of illegal mining. Police warn that continued damage to riverbanks could cause permanent environmental harm. Social media videos show Dr. Bisiw leading armed officers through thick forest areas with the arrested Chinese nationals. The footage has created public interest and renewed demands for stronger punishments against foreigners who break Ghana's mining laws.
