Trade Minister Mrs. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare has started talking with car industry groups to keep President Mahama's campaign promise about changing vehicle import rules. The current law—the Customs Amendment Act 2020—stops people from bringing salvaged cars into Ghana. These include vehicles damaged by crashes, fires, floods, or other events. During his campaign last year, Mahama pledged to change this law because it hurt many repair workers and transport businesses across the country.
The Minister has met with new car sellers, used car dealers, and vehicle assembly companies in Accra to hear their thoughts before making changes. Her most recent meeting happened with the Suame Magazine Industrial Development Organization (SMIDO) in Kumasi, which includes many trade groups from that area. She told these repair specialists that the President remains serious about keeping his word to help their businesses grow as important players in the car industry.
Mrs. Ofosu-Adjare plans to finish her meetings at Kokompe soon, clearing the path for changes to the law as the President promised. She mentioned, "President Mahama promised that within 120 days after taking office, he would begin the process to change the Act, but I believe we will finish even faster than that." She also promised to address other concerns raised during their talks, stating that helping industries grow remains a key goal for the government.
When the repair workers asked about getting a foundry, the Minister said she would discuss this with the President to find ways to strengthen Suame Magazine's ability to serve customers. "This place handles everything about cars, and Ghana needs to focus more attention on Suame Magazine - exactly what President Mahama has asked me to do," she told the workers. The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, added that these meetings show how committed the government is to working with different groups to build a better Ghana together.
