A group of military engineers and doctors from Ghana just landed in Jamaica to help with hurricane recovery. The team has fifty-four members, including forty nine army engineers and five medical professionals. They arrived at Norman Manley International Airport and were greeted by Foreign Minister Kamina Johnson Smith. She thanked Ghana for the timely support, noting it followed a direct request from Prime Minister Andrew Holness to Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama.
Colonel Emanuel Asia, leading the Ghanaian contingent, said his team is ready to start work and sees this as a chance to strengthen longstanding bonds between the two nations. The engineers will partner with the Jamaica Defence Force's 1 Engineer Regiment on construction and repair projects in damaged areas. Ghana also sent relief supplies, shipped with assistance from the United States military airlift. US Air Force personnel were present for the arrival.
This deployment adds to the international military aid Jamaica has received since Hurricane Melissa struck in late October. The Category Five storm caused extensive damage, and recovery efforts are still ongoing nearly two months later. The Foreign Minister highlighted that the relationship between Jamaica and Ghana dates back well before their formal diplomatic ties began.
