Ghana says no to third term, keeps two-term cap firm

The head of Ghana's constitution review committee says people there strongly oppose a third presidential term. Professor Henry Kwasi Prempeh addressed claims that former president John Mahama might seek another term if he wins office again. He stated the constitution clearly blocks this with a two-term limit, a rule his committee found absolutely no public demand to change.

Prempeh noted that political parties themselves act as a major barrier to extending tenures, with many candidates waiting for a turn. His group rejected suggestions to even clarify the existing term limit wording, calling the original language perfectly clear. The committee did propose other amendments, however, like lowering the presidential eligibility age to thirty and extending the term length from four to five years for better policy execution.
