Ghana Supreme Court Lineup Will Blow Your Mind

Ghana's Supreme Court has 13 top judges who make final decisions about legal cases. The court can cancel rulings from lower courts when it hears criminal, civil, or government matters. Its power comes from the 1992 Constitution, which sets up how justice works.

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo began leading the court in June 2023 after joining as a justice in 2019. Paul Baffoe-Bonnie became a member in 2008 under President Kufuor after working at the Court of Appeal earlier. Gabriel Pwamang joined in 2015 during President Mahama's time, coming from private practice. Avril Lovelace-Johnson moved up to the high court in 2019 under President Akufo-Addo.

Justice Tanko Muhammad earned his spot in 2020 after serving as a High Court judge. Professor Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu also joined that year from her teaching job at the University of Ghana. Emmanuel Kulendi arrived in 2020 from his law firm, where he helped with business cases. Samuel Adibu Asiedu started in 2022 after climbing through various court levels.

George Koomson became a justice in 2023 after serving as a judge in the Court of Appeal. Ernest Gaewu joined the same year after working as a High Court judge. Henry Kwofie moved to the top court in 2024 after serving in the Court of Appeal. Yaw Darko Asare started in 2024 with a background in shipping law. Richard Adjei-Frimpong took his position most recently in 2024.
