Al Shabaab Rampage Forces AU to Seek 8000 Troops

The peacekeeping mission in Somalia needs 8,000 more troops to fight against Al-Shabaab attacks. Officials made this announcement Friday at a meeting in Entebbe, Uganda. The African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia faces serious challenges that need quick solutions.

Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu said the mission requires additional soldiers, more air support, better intelligence, and improved coordination between Somali government groups. Uganda sends the most troops to this mission, followed by Ethiopia, Djibouti, and Kenya. The mission also needs proper training for Somali security forces and local defense groups to protect areas freed from terrorists.

The peacekeeping effort struggles with a 25% funding shortage that limits commanders' abilities. Dr. Workneh asked countries to help fill this gap through donor conferences. He also requested backup supply systems and access to facilities that can serve as supply centers for troops fighting terrorists.

Foreign ministers, defense officials, and representatives from the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, and United Nations attended the meeting. They discussed ways to support the mission against growing threats.
