Al Shabaab raid on Chinese workers repelled in Mandera

Security forces fought off an al-Shabaab raid targeting Chinese workers in Elwak town, Mandera County. The attackers hit a compound near the local police station, damaging vehicles and property. All ten Chinese nationals, who are road construction workers, were secured without injury.

The militia used four Toyota Probox vehicles to approach from the Somalia border area. They broke through the main gate and fired on the residence, engaging in a long firefight with the guarding officers. Reinforcements from the Border Patrol Unit helped repel the assault. The attackers ultimately fled the scene.

In a separate security incident the same day, bomb experts disabled a suspected IED found under a bridge in Migori County. They recovered several gel explosives at that location. Police reported no casualties in either event and stated that investigations into both attacks are continuing.
