Ghana teen custody death in Simpa police cell prompts Tarkwa probe

Police started looking into how a 19-year-old boy died inside a jail cell at Simpa station. The teenager appeared to have killed himself during the night. Officers found him hanging from the cell door using pieces of his sleeping blanket. Chief Superintendent Kusi Appiah told reporters about the sad event. The boy had been locked up for allegedly taking gold from another worker.

Isaac Asare works as a small miner and lived near the dead teenager at Simpa. Asare came home from his job and noticed someone had taken six pieces of gold from his bedroom. He thought the young man named Obeng had stolen his valuable metal. Asare got help from other people to catch Obeng and bring him to the police station. Officers charged the teenager with theft and kept him in their cells.

The accused boy told police he had taken the gold and even showed them where he sold it. Unfortunately the person who bought the stolen goods was not there when police arrived. Officers planned to continue their investigation the next day. On Sunday morning around five o'clock a police worker discovered the teenager had died. Medical staff took the body to Tarkwa Municipal Hospital where doctors will examine it closely.
