Ghana theatre boss Ben-Abdallah calls it quits

Dr. Mohammed Ben-Abdallah, the renowned Ghanaian playwright and theatre scholar, died Thursday at age 81. His son Abdul Muiz Abass confirmed the death through a Facebook announcement Friday. The family will bury Dr. Abdallah following Jumu'ah prayers Friday in Kumasi according to Islamic traditions. A three-day Dua ceremony has been arranged with additional funeral services planned for Accra. The scholar passed away on September 18, 2025.

Born April 25, 1944, in Kumasi, Dr. Abdallah started his career teaching before entering theatre studies at the University of Ghana. He completed his MFA in Theatre Arts at the University of Georgia in 1976 and earned his PhD from the University of Texas at Austin in 1980. Dr. Abdallah played a vital role creating the National Theatre of Ghana and its resident performance groups. He directed the School of Performing Arts at the University of Ghana. His leadership influenced countless theatre practitioners and scholars throughout his academic career.
