Ghanas City Boom 37B Race to Go Green

Local Government Minister Ahmed Ibrahim wants Ghana to build better cities for everyone. He spoke at a meeting about the Ghana Sustainable Cities Strategy in Accra. Cities must welcome people of all backgrounds and income levels. More than half of Ghanaians live in urban areas and this number keeps growing. Cities should protect the environment and give all residents good opportunities.

Over 56 percent of people already live in cities across Ghana. Experts predict this will jump to about 61 percent within five years. The new strategy helps guide how towns and cities should develop. Government officials will work with traditional leaders and religious groups to make changes. Citizens must also help create the communities they want to live in.

World Bank official Robert Taliercio said Ghana needs 37 billion dollars each year for infrastructure projects. Flooding damages homes and businesses throughout the country. About 5.5 million people live close to the ocean where water levels threaten their safety. Traditional chiefs control 80 percent of land in Ghana and must help with city planning. The World Bank promises to support Ghana's efforts to create greener and safer urban spaces.
