Gono to Spill Secrets on Makoni's ZW172M Scam

Former Reserve Bank Governor Gideon Gono will appear in court on June 13. He is the main witness against a Harare couple facing fraud charges. Clark and Beverly Makoni are accused of stealing ZW$ 172 million from Gono's company. The couple says the charges are false and calls them mean-spirited attacks. They believe Gono can reveal the truth about what really happened.

Prosecutor Heather Muokoto plans to finish her case after Gono testifies. She will also call investigating officer Eric Chacha before closing arguments begin. Defense lawyers say they are prepared for Gono's court appearance. They consider him the most important witness in this case. His testimony will help decide if the couple committed these serious crimes.

The state claims Clark forged company papers to make himself director and secretary. Beverly became his assistant in the fake scheme. They told banks they were new Valley Lodge shareholders and wanted to change who could sign checks. The couple gained control of the company bank accounts and stole ZW$137 million, according to prosecutors.

Fadzai Chiro testified Friday as a former Valley Lodge accountant. She worked at the Mutare location and knew nothing about the fraud allegations. Chiro said she learned about the case when police asked for her statement. She had never met Beverly before seeing her in court that day. Clark interviewed her for the accounting job, but she had no other contact with either defendant.
