Google, will.i.am drop AI bots in Africa, ITU cheers

The International Telecommunication Union partnered with Google and will.i.am to establish artificial intelligence and robotics education programs for African students. Officials announced the collaboration during the Digital@UNGA event at the United Nations General Assembly. The program targets young people in underserved communities where schools connect to internet through the joint ITU-UNICEF Giga project. Girls and underrepresented groups receive special attention.

Students between ages 10 and 18 gain access to hands-on AI training through robotics kits and localized curricula. Google.org provides one million dollars in funding and technical expertise. The initiative launches in Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa before expanding continent-wide. Teachers receive specialized training to support the program across participating schools.
