Gospel star Betty Bayo dies at 39 after leukemia battle

Kenyan gospel artist Betty Bayo died on Monday following complications from acute myeloid leukemia, with family representatives confirming her passing at 1:03 p.m. The musician, whose real name was Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua, had been hospitalized since the previous week after doctors diagnosed the blood cancer, which caused severe bleeding that required transfer to Kenyatta National Hospital on Friday. Her former spouse, Apostle Victor Kanyari, joined relatives during the announcement to the media.

Bayo maintained a significant streaming presence on digital platforms, with her song 11th Hour accumulating more than 189,000 plays on Spotify to become her most popular track. Additional releases, including Busy Busy and Jemedari, each surpassed 110,000 streams, while tracks such as Siyabonga, Thiiri, Manejo, Ti Mundu, Damu, and Anabadilisha continued attracting listeners across multiple generations.

Industry colleagues praised the vocalist for her humble character and inspirational contributions to gospel music throughout a career spanning over ten years.
