Government finds millions for athletes, nothing for you

Kenya handed out cash prizes to two female runners who smashed world records at a major track meet. Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet each received five million shillings from government officials. The money came through a special program that rewards athletes for breaking records and winning major competitions. Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya gave them the awards and praised their hard work. Both women made history at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon.

Kipyegon crushed her previous 1500-meter world record with a blazing time of 3 minutes and 48.68 seconds. She beat her earlier mark by more than a third of a second. The three-time Olympic champion had nearly broken the four-minute mile barrier just days before. Chebet dominated the 5000-meter race and became the first woman ever to run under 14 minutes on a track. She finished in 13 minutes and 58.06 seconds.

President William Ruto cheered for both athletes on social media. He called their performances breathtaking and inspirational. Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga also celebrated the runners and said Kenya beamed with pride. Government officials promise more support for elite runners as the country prepares for upcoming championships. The 2025 World Athletics Championships and 2028 Olympic Games are major targets for Kenyan athletes.
