Government intensifies efforts to revitalise Community Share Ownership Trusts for local development

Zimbabwe accelerates Community Share Ownership Trust revival efforts after widespread institutional failures across the country. Government statistics reveal that only six operational entities remain from fifty-nine registered organizations. The survival rate demonstrates severe management deficiencies within community development frameworks. Officials attribute organizational collapse to inadequate supervision and ambiguous implementation procedures. These trusts previously funded infrastructure projects, educational facilities, healthcare systems, and local business ventures.

Minister Nqobizitha Ndlovu announced comprehensive policy reforms during recent Gweru consultations. Cabinet approval will formalize new operational guidelines for trust management and mining company compliance. Minister Owen Ncube emphasized extractive sector partnerships through established entities like Tongogara, Mberengwa, and Zvishavane organizations. Regional investments from Dinson Iron, Chengetai Cheng Xi, Mimosa, and Murowa Diamonds provide economic opportunities for community engagement.

Traditional leaders express frustration over mining operations that extract resources without community compensation. Chief Ndanga described successful historical projects such as road construction, borehole maintenance, school building, and clinic development. Current mining activities damage local infrastructure without rehabilitation commitments from extractive companies.
