Government secures loan to fix Kwekwe-Nkayi-Lupane road

Zimbabwe has obtained financing to restore the 240-kilometer Kwekwe-Nkayi-Lupane Highway, with completion targeted by late 2026, according to Transport Minister Felix Mhona during parliamentary proceedings. The rehabilitated route will shorten travel distances to Victoria Falls by more than 200 kilometers and reduce transportation costs for agricultural producers moving goods to Bulawayo or Kwekwe markets. Two construction teams will begin work simultaneously from opposite ends of the corridor.

Mhona disclosed that his ministry is demanding financial accountability reports from local authorities before releasing Zimbabwe National Road Administration funds, after discovering councils diverted road maintenance allocations to employee compensation. The government is considering centralizing management of urban and rural roadways under national control to address poor coordination and engineering deficiencies at the municipal level.
