Govt proposes ending salaries for student nurses

Zimbabwean authorities are considering eliminating salaries for student nurses after officials claimed the compensation attracts excessive applications from individuals lacking genuine commitment to healthcare professions. Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi confirmed that recruitment challenges stem partly from fraudulent qualification scandals at institutions, including Mpilo Central Hospital and Parirenyatwa Hospital, prompting enhanced verification protocols through the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council.

Public response has divided sharply over the proposed funding elimination, with supporters arguing financial incentives compromise professional dedication while critics contend application volume does not compel inflated hiring numbers. Senator Maxwell Mdhluri previously warned that unqualified personnel infiltration threatens patient safety and wastes government resources.

The Health and Child Care Ministry intensified credential vetting after discovering forged certificates among nursing candidates seeking positions at major medical facilities throughout the country.
