Govt raises gas price for fertiliser factories by 83%

Bangladesh authorities approved an 83 percent increase in natural gas rates for fertilizer manufacturers, lifting costs from 16 taka per cubic meter to 29.25 taka. Energy regulator BERC announced the adjustment after rejecting more aggressive 150 percent hikes proposed by state energy distributor Petrobangla and associated companies.

Chairman Jalal Ahmed acknowledged agricultural sector concerns about elevated production expenses while emphasizing that liquefied natural gas import burdens are straining government finances. The regulator attempted to balance food security priorities against mounting energy procurement challenges facing the nation's supply infrastructure.

Officials indicated the revised tariff structure could undergo additional modifications depending on international commodity fluctuations and domestic consumption patterns during subsequent months.
