GPH's Hlatshwayo pulls nail from Chaurura's head

Gweru Provincial Hospital completed its first neurosurgical operation after extracting a steel nail embedded in the skull of a 75-year-old patient who has since returned home following treatment. Leviticus Chaurura received care from resident neurosurgeon Lawrence Hlatshwayo and anesthesiologist Precious Chiputa at the facility, which previously transferred complex cases to hospitals in Bulawayo or Harare.

Hospital superintendent Fabian Mashingaidze credited the Angel of Hope Foundation and First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa for providing equipment enabling advanced procedures. The medical center plans to construct a two-story neurosurgical wing pending central government funding.

Head of Surgery Brian Paketh said the expanded capabilities will serve approximately 1.6 million Midlands Province residents who can receive specialized treatment locally. Sofia Masunda confirmed her father is recovering at his rural Gutu residence, but declined to explain how the metal object penetrated his head.
