Grace Mugabe cried in court yesterday when she saw her late husband's stolen suits. The judge had to stop the court so Mrs. Mugabe could calm down. The suits belonged to Robert Mugabe, the former president of Zimbabwe.
Four workers are in trouble for the theft. They are Allen and Danmore Chinamonya, Samson Karonga, and Tendai Bunganirwa. The police say they broke into 11 big containers full of the Mugabe family's belongings and took a lot of stuff.
Mrs. Mugabe told the court that Allen, who used to drive for them, was caught with some stolen things. She said he also took their car without asking and stole gas. She thinks he used the vehicle to move the heavy stolen items. She also pointed at Karonga, saying he was always around when things went missing.
The stolen stuff was worth between 3.5 and 4 million US dollars. When asked why she only blamed these four out of her 60 workers, Mrs. Mugabe said these four had stolen before. The police found some stolen things at their homes.
The four workers say they didn't steal anything. They claim the containers were accessible to anyone because they were in a parking lot. They also say former President Mugabe gave them the things as gifts after he stepped down in 2017.
The story began in 2018 when Mrs. Mugabe brought the containers to her house in Borrowdale, Harare. The stuff came from Zimbabwe House after Mr. Mugabe left office. When Mrs. Mugabe wanted to give some things to a museum this May, she found the locks broken and lots of stuff missing.
The police found some stolen things at the workers' houses. They returned a few suits, some bed covers, and a TV, but they only found about $2,000 worth of the millions taken.
