Gujarat's big plan - teach more people to hit rocks

Gujarat will showcase stone craft skill development programs at the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference from Oct. 9-10 as part of the state's workforce training initiatives. The Stone Artisan Park Training Institute operates two facilities that teach traditional stone crafting techniques to prepare workers for the industry. One campus in Ambaji specializes in marble work, while the Dhrangadhra location focuses on sandstone carving methods.

Kuldipsinh Pravinsinh Rathod completed his training at the Ambaji facility after finishing his Class X studies and now earns 25,000 rupees per month as a lathe machine operator. The program enrolled 945 students between 2022 and 2025 across both centers, with 307 graduates from Ambaji and 331 from Dhrangadhra. Twenty-four sculptors created marble pieces at a recent symposium held at the Statue of Unity with assistance from 48 carvers and a blacksmith.
