Gumi calls terrorists ‘our warriors,’ cleric demands arrest

A Catholic writer just demanded that a Nigerian cleric be locked up for defending terrorists. Deacon Nick Donnelly wants Sheikh Ahmad Gumi arrested following Gumi's reaction to American airstrikes in Sokoto State. Donnelly posted this call on social media, accusing Gumi of calling jihadist militants our warriors and protesting the military action ordered by a former U.S. president. He stated Gumi should face trial for crimes against humanity and pressured Nigerian President Tinubu to publicly condemn him or be considered complicit.

The whole thing started after Gumi made a statement telling Nigeria's government to stop cooperating with the U.S. over the strikes. He framed the airstrikes as targeting perpetrators of an alleged genocide against Christians. Donnelly interpreted Gumi's remarks as support for the violent groups carrying out attacks. The Catholic author argued that this defense of the insurgents, who have inflicted severe violence on Christian communities, was beyond the pale and warranted immediate legal action from authorities.

Donnelly's post framed the issue in stark terms, asserting that failure to act makes the national leadership accomplices. He insisted a trial was necessary, given the severity of the ongoing conflict and the cleric's inflammatory language. The demand places direct pressure on the Tinubu administration to either distance itself from Gumi's position or face serious international criticism for tolerating what Donnelly sees as endorsement of terrorism.
