Gwanda-Maphisa Road drama heats up as Matabeleland South races the Independence deadline

Government officials have kicked off construction work on the massive 60-kilometer Gwanda-Maphisa Road rehabilitation project across Matabeleland South Province. Workers have already tackled the initial 10-kilometer stretch as part of preparations for the 2026 Independence Day celebrations. The ambitious infrastructure upgrade will slash travel times between Gwanda and surrounding districts while boosting economic opportunities. Officials expect the entire road project to wrap up by early next year as part of legacy development initiatives. The upgraded route will connect vital economic centers including Arda Antelope, Makwe Irrigation Scheme, border posts, and tourist attractions in Matobo.

Provincial Affairs Minister Albert Nguluvhe toured the construction site and praised the transformative impact on local communities. The minister described the road as the heartbeat of Matabeleland South Province during his inspection visit. Completion of the project will reduce travel distances by more than 150 kilometers to various destinations across the region. The upgraded highway creates the shortest route for travelers from Gwanda, Beitbridge, Insiza, Masvingo, and beyond heading to Maphisa. Provincial roads engineer Mangisi Nkomo confirmed that initial grading and detour preparations have finished successfully.

The Gwanda-Maphisa rehabilitation forms part of President Mnangagwa's strategy to rotate national celebrations across different provinces. Government officials have paired the Independence Day hosting decision with substantial infrastructure investments for lasting community benefits. The policy ensures every province receives development projects that transform local economies and improve connectivity. Similar legacy projects have previously delivered clinics, bridges, classroom blocks, boreholes, and sports facilities to host provinces.
