Gwanda Municipality started digging trenches around town after storms wrecked homes and left five families without roofs last month, and Mayor Thulani Moyo said the council brought in tractors plus a tipper truck to haul away sand blocking the drainage pipes. Residents are pitching in by clearing out debris manually while machines handle the bigger channels, but Moyo called out people for dumping trash and building walls without gaps for water to pass through.
Benjamin Ncube from Spitzkop North said the lack of proper drainage systems in unserviced zones is setting everyone up for disaster if heavy rainfall hits for more than a few days straight. Sbongiwe Msipha mentioned the business district basically shuts down when it pours because nobody can drive or walk through the flooded streets.
