Gweru council fuming over fuel and road woes

Gweru city leaders are unhappy with the Zimbabwe National Road Administration regarding money and fuel. They say Zinara gives them much less than promised, which prevents them from fixing roads full of holes. The city can't start needed repair projects because of this shortage, and road conditions keep getting worse across Gweru as a result.

Mayor Martin Chivhoko spoke at a council meeting Tuesday. He said their roads look terrible because Zinara doesn't provide enough support. The mayor wants answers about fuel for 2024. They promised 30,329 liters but delivered only 4,000 - just 13 percent. Other cities received their complete fuel amounts.

The city had planned for more than ZiG10.7 million but received just ZiG5.6 million - about 53 percent of what they expected. Many other local governments got everything they asked for. The mayor asked staff to talk with Zinara leaders about this problem. He wants to make roads safe for everyone who uses them.

Chivhoko promised clear communication with residents about all services. He mentioned water supply problems caused by power issues at pumping stations. The city talks regularly with power companies to solve these problems. He asked people to report any water service problems directly to council offices.

The city also faces sewer blockages because people throw the wrong items down drains. Workers have found dogs, sanitary products, and kitchen tools clogging sewer lines. These blockages cost money to fix and create health dangers. Chivhoko asked everyone to throw trash away properly instead of putting harmful things down drains.

Council workers have removed multiple trash piles around Gweru. They follow a trash pickup schedule but need help from citizens. The mayor asked residents to report illegal dumping sites and stop creating new ones. He stressed that keeping Gweru clean requires everyone's cooperation.

Chivhoko reminded residents that paying bills helps improve city services. He welcomed upcoming investigators who will check how the council operates. The mayor believes open processes build trust between city government and citizens. He promised full cooperation with any investigation team.
