Hamata Questions Land Tax Exemption Criteria

Land Tax Break for Judge Raises Questions in Namibia.

A member of parliament wants answers about tax breaks given to important people in Namibia. Hidipo Hamata of the Popular Democratic Movement asked why some landowners do not need to pay land taxes.

His questions focus on Judge Shafimana Ueitele, who received a tax break. The judge is leading a court case where Minister Calle Schlettwein must defend the government's actions.

The case involves Job Amupanda, who leads Affirmative Repositioning. Amupanda wants the court to remove Namibia's veterinary fence, known as the redline. He believes the fence goes against the country's basic laws.

In parliament, Hamata asked Minister Schlettwein about the tax break given to Judge Ueitele. He thinks giving a tax break to a judge who runs a case about the government might make people doubt the fairness of court decisions.

Schlettwein has time to answer these questions. He can speak in parliament on Thursday or in the next few weeks.

The law lets the minister free some landowners from taxes if they meet certain rules. These rules help people who faced unfair treatment in the past. The law aims to fix old problems in society, business, and learning.
