Harare car rental fraudster jailed for eight years for a string of vehicle thefts using fake IDs

A 36-year-old fraudster received an eight-year prison sentence for stealing rental vehicles through elaborate identity theft schemes. The man operated under four different aliases between October and November 2024, targeting car rental businesses across Harare. He presented counterfeit driver's licenses and forged residence documents to secure vehicles from unsuspecting operators.

The criminal would make initial payments to establish credibility before vanishing with the rented cars. Police recovered a Honda Fit in Damafalls and a Toyota Axio in Dema after tracing sales to innocent buyers. GPS tracking technology proved instrumental when one vehicle owner became suspicious and located his silver Honda Fit in Murisa Village.

Detectives apprehended the suspect at the NSSA Building on February 27, 2025, after he attempted to flee. Authorities discovered additional forged documents during his arrest. The National Prosecuting Authority warns rental agencies to verify documentation carefully and install tracking devices to prevent similar crimes.
