A 32-year-old officer from Mabvuku Police Station faces criminal abuse of office charges after authorities caught him allegedly impersonating a traffic officer and soliciting bribes in Harare. Prosper Nyamurowa appeared in court and was remanded in custody, with his bail hearing scheduled for today.
On November 6, Nyamurowa wore his full police uniform despite being off duty and conducted unauthorized traffic enforcement at the intersection of Julius Nyerere Way and Kenneth Kaunda Avenue. Authorities say he stopped Chinese national Huang Yao, who was driving a LINXIS van, and entered the vehicle to demand $100 for an unspecified traffic violation.
Members of the Harare Province Anti-Corruption Unit, including Webster Makukutu and several other officers, observed the suspicious activity during their patrol and intercepted the vehicle on Fidel Castro Road. Their investigation confirmed that Nyamurowa had no official deployment to that location and that properly assigned officers were already manning the traffic post.
