Harare Court Uncovers Massive TShirt Duty Scam

Six people went to court for lying about T-shirts to avoid taxes. They told officials that cloth shirts were farm water pipes instead, which helped them skip almost $79,000 in taxes. The group included two tax workers, two business owners, a truck driver, and a shipping helper.

They changed papers to make 17 tons of shirts look like farm gear. The shirts came from Slovenia, but papers claimed China sent water pipes. Farm tools, unlike clothes, enter the country tax-free. Tax officers never checked inside the boxes when they arrived. The shirts went to a farm, where workers took them out without paying any money to the government.

A judge locked all six people up until next Tuesday. Police said they worked together to fool the system. They first brought the shirts to a port in another country. Later, they switched names on shipping papers to make it look legal. Nobody found the shirts after they left the storage place.
