Harare fights water crisis as residents queue at dawn

Harare residents are facing a growing water crisis that has recently worsened. Many people are forced to use unsafe water from open wells and boreholes because they have no other options. This creates serious health risks for waterborne illnesses like cholera and typhoid. Neighborhoods such as Budiriro, Mabvuku, and Glen View suffer the most, with some families experiencing a lack of municipal water for over a month.

Chipo Moyo from Mabvuku described her daily struggles with the water shortage. She heads out at 3 AM to collect water from boreholes but often finds many others already waiting in line. The situation continues to worsen daily, and residents have no idea when reliable water will return. People feel trapped in this difficult position with few alternatives.

Innocent Ruwende, speaking on behalf of the City of Harare, acknowledged the water problems facing residents. He explained that money shortages and ongoing maintenance at treatment facilities limit what officials can accomplish. These explanations have done little to satisfy the growing frustration among city residents who need immediate solutions.

Medical professionals have raised concerns about potential disease outbreaks unless the situation improves rapidly. Community organizations have called for national government intervention, describing the situation as a serious public health emergency. As anger increases throughout Harare, residents demand permanent solutions rather than temporary fixes.

City officials attribute several factors to the ongoing water shortages. They point to deteriorating infrastructure that needs replacement across Harare, a lack of adequate treatment chemicals at Morton Jaffray Waterworks, and frequent electricity outages that prevent water pumping stations from operating properly. Local authorities have asked residents to conserve water as they search for better long-term solutions.
