Harare lawyer blasts Mnangagwa's judge tribunals as kangaroo courts

Chawaona Wildroad Kanoti petitioned Zimbabwe's Attorney-General about constitutional problems with presidential tribunals that investigate judges. The Harare-based lawyer claims the current system lacks democratic features and appears tyrannical. He argues that accused judges cannot appeal tribunal decisions and face predetermined outcomes.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa removed Francis Bere, Benjamin Chikowero, and Erica Ndewere after tribunal recommendations. Kanoti states that section 187 prevents judicial review of these decisions. The lawyer advocates for constitutional amendments that would allow appeals to higher courts, such as the Supreme Court.

The petition criticizes the use of retired judges on tribunals, as their independence may be compromised. Kanoti sent copies to the Justice Minister and Judicial Service Commission. He urges Parliament to change the Constitution and protect judicial fairness through democratic reforms.
