Harare maid, gardener face theft charges after stealing $35,000

A housemaid and a gardener from Borrowdale, Harare, appeared in court on charges of colluding to steal US$35,000 and 40,000 Tanzanian Shillings from their employer. Wilbert Maambirwi, 58, and Tariro Manda, 25, were charged with theft of trust property and were remanded in custody by Harare magistrate Tapiwa Kuhudzai, pending a bail application today.

Gift Muzilikazi, a self-employed businessman who owns clothing shops in Harare's central business district, employed the two. It is alleged that between January last year and this month, Maambirwi and Manda stole clothes, shoes, and cutlery, which they resold. The theft was discovered last month, leading to police involvement, and both suspects admitted to the crime. Investigators recovered stolen items worth US$16,000.
