Harare pushes National Health Insurance Bill, Mombeshora vows surge

Zimbabwe advances healthcare system improvements while facing reduced international donor funding. Health Minister Douglas Mombeshora addressed development partners at a Harare coordination forum about financing reforms. The government plans to present National Health Insurance legislation to Parliament within weeks. This initiative aims to establish sustainable funding mechanisms through the pooling of resources and dedicated health taxes. Officials target better medical outcomes for all citizens through strategic resource allocation.

UN Resident Coordinator Edward Kallon praised the ministry's insurance scheme development efforts. He emphasized the need for phased implementation with transparent governance and stakeholder engagement. British Development Director Joe Abbott confirmed ongoing partnership commitments despite changing international financing patterns. Technical assistance and expertise sharing will continue as Zimbabwe assumes greater responsibility. Priority areas include infrastructure expansion, digital health programs, and initiatives for health workforce development.
