Harare roadblocks stir anger and Zanu PF concern

Senior officials within ZANU PF have expressed concern about the multiplication of police checkpoints on major roads leading into Harare, warning that many have become revenue collection points for corrupt officers rather than legitimate law enforcement operations. The party fears public anger over alleged extortion could undermine recent efforts to rebuild support in the capital, particularly following well-attended gatherings in Chitungwiza and other urban areas.

Motorists traveling the Harare-Chitungwiza highway report encountering multiple roadblocks positioned within short distances of each other, with commuter bus operators claiming daily losses despite possessing valid documentation. Transport workers allege that demands for payments intensified after anti-corruption investigations temporarily disrupted bribe networks, prompting officers to demand higher sums disguised as official penalties.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi has reminded personnel that checkpoints must comply with distance requirements and operational standards, though the directive appears to have limited impact on ground practices extending into residential neighborhoods throughout the region.
