Hazaribagh women ditch smoke for Modi gas

Rural women faced health risks from wood and coal cooking methods for decades after India gained independence. The government launched Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana in 2016 to provide LPG connections to underserved households. Ruby Devi from Hazaribagh district reports dramatic lifestyle improvements since receiving her gas connection. Cooking requires less time while reducing respiratory problems from smoke exposure.

Babita Devi says the program allows more time for farming and household activities through efficient cooking. Health benefits extend beyond convenience as families experience fewer colds, coughs and eye irritation. The scheme targets rural areas where residents previously burned firewood, coal and cow-dung for fuel. Officials designed the initiative to transform kitchens and improve life quality for millions of women.
