The HDMI Forum has released new cable standards that deliver much faster data speeds. HDMI 2.2 Ultra96 cables can move information at 96 gigabits per second. This speed beats DisplayPort 2.1 cables that reach only 80 gigabits per second. The previous HDMI 2.1 standard moved data at 48 gigabits per second. These new cables double that performance level.
Higher speeds allow displays to show extremely sharp pictures at very fast refresh rates. The cables can handle 4K video at 480 frames per second with almost no compression. They also support 8K video at 240 frames per second and 10K video at 120 frames per second. Some setups can even display 16K video at 60 frames per second. Most people will not need such advanced capabilities right away.
Cable makers must meet strict requirements to earn Ultra96 certification from the HDMI Forum. Each cable needs special testing and must have Ultra96 labels printed directly on them. Products without these labels cannot guarantee the full 96 gigabit speed even if they claim HDMI 2.2 compatibility.
