Health Ministry reports rise in flu cases, especially in schools

The Health Ministry has reported an increase in influenza-like illness (ILI) cases and influenza clusters nationwide, particularly in educational institutions, though the situation remains within seasonal expectations and is under control.

Hospital admissions for Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) showed a slight decline, with no new virus mutations detected. The rise in cases is attributed to the seasonal Influenza A (H3) strain.

Monitoring at 58 sentinel health clinics revealed that the ILI rate increased to 7.38% in Epidemiological Week 40/2025, up from 5.95% the previous week. The highest ILI consultation rates were recorded in Selangor, Melaka, Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Sabah.

Surveillance data showed a drop in SARI admissions, while influenza clusters increased from 14 to 97, with Selangor reporting the most. The ministry advised that most ILI cases are mild and require clinical diagnosis, with priority given to high-risk groups for treatment.
