Health officials return stolen funds in Tembisa scandal

Following the release of an interim report on the Tembisa Hospital corruption scandal, Special Investigating Unit head Andy Mothibi disclosed that certain health department officials have voluntarily offered to return stolen funds. Mothibi stated that these individuals hope to avoid potential criminal charges. The investigation has uncovered a vast network of fraud and corruption totaling approximately two billion rand, involving syndicates that misused public money intended for patient care.

The probe, initiated after the murder of whistleblower Babita Deokaran, has thus far connected fifteen officials to suspect payments worth 122 million rand. The SIU's ongoing work has identified multiple criminal syndicates and led to the freezing of significant assets. Mothibi indicated that the voluntary repayments could help accelerate the recovery of misappropriated state funds.

The final investigation is expected to conclude by November 2027. The SIU has also made numerous referrals for disciplinary action and criminal prosecution related to the scandal.
