Heritage in Peril as Money Woes Doom History

Four hundred old special places in Kenya might disappear because nobody takes care of them. Ms. Ummi Bashir told people who make rules that they need money to fix these places.

Ms. Bashir talked to a group at the National Assembly. She said important people like Mambo Mbotela did not receive honors because her office had no money. "We asked for 50 million shillings to make a Heroes Fund. This would help us honor great citizens who made Kenya famous," she said.

Her team wants money for many things. They want to build a place called Wundanyi Resource Centre. They hope to make a music room for artists. They plan to make the Kapenguria Six place better. They wish to build something named the Marachi Cultural Centre.

Ms. Bashir explained that they cannot finish a law about the Kiswahili language because they have no money. She warned that Kenya might lose its history if nobody helps fix the old special places. "Kenya has amazing historical sites across the country. These places are falling apart because we ignore them," Ms. Bashir said.

She told the group that visitors stay away from these places because they look bad. "The few people who visit say they feel unhappy with what they see."

Ms. Bashir came to discuss financial plans for 2025. Mr. Salim Mvurya also came to the meeting but left early. "We received 3.54 billion shillings, but we need 5.98 billion," she explained. Most of this money pays for everyday things, but only 90 million shillings helps build new stuff.

The group said Kenya should fix these historical places. Mr. Caroli Omondi told Ms. Bashir to find friends from other countries who could help. "Some people around the world want to save old special places. You should ask them to help with money," he said.
